| About 36 miles above the Arctic Circle and deep in Inupiat Eskimo country. The Inupiat are a friendly people, and their crafts, customs and traditions are fascinating. All tours to Kotzebue include a visit to a cultural camp where native youth and elders, eager to carry on their cultural heritage, share traditional crafts and customs. At the National Park Service Visitor Center and the NANA Museum of the Arctic, see dioramas of local wildlife and demonstrations of Inupiat dances and customs, including the traditional blanket toss. The plant life on the nearby tundra is quite unique, making your guided tundra walk seem like a visit to another world, particularly while enjoying the effects of the midnight sun. | Kodiak Island is a place of spectacular scenic beauty, a landscape carved by retreating glaciers into jagged peaks, fjord-like bays, and wide valleys. The mild marine climate has fostered a lush carpet of vegetation over the island, making it an ideal home for an amazing variety of flora and fauna. Your visit starts with a guided tour of Kodiak. In the new Alutiiq Museum you’ll learn about the 7,000-year old heritage of the island's Native inhabitants. The Kodiak Alutiiq Dancers will perform dances for you incorporating both traditional and contemporary stories from their culture. The landmark Baranov Museum documents the island's diverse history, from prehistoric Native occupation, through the era of Russian fur-trading, to Alaska's territorial days and its role as a major operational staging area during World War II. You’ll drive by the world's largest Coast Guard base and have a short stop at Fort Abercrombie State Park, an excellent introduction to Kodiak's large variety of animals and birds, its wildflowers and native flora. Highlight of the day is a spectacular floatplane flight to the bear observation area on the Karluk River which provides up-close views of the largest brown bears in the world fishing for salmon. |
